Australian Football Championship (National)

Timeline :
1977 - The night-series precursor to the Australian Football Championship commenced.
1978 - Participating clubs included a representative team from Tasmania.

1979 :
The Australian Football Championship commenced.
Clubs from the VFL & WAFL competed along with representative teams from Tasmania, NSW and ACT.

1980 - Queensland clubs and South Australia clubs joined the competition.
1982 - Sydney FC were Australian Football Champions.

1986 :
Participating clubs included :
 - Essendon (did not make finals),
 - Hawthorn,
 - Melbourne (did not make finals) and
 - North Adelaide.
Finals Series :
 - Semi-Final - Hawthorn defeated North Adelaide.
 - Grand Final - Hawthorn won the competition.
This was the last season of the Australian Football Championship.
